Observation Narrative
The habitat is an acidic, nutrient poor wetland saturated by groundwater seepage. Although much of the Buck Run headwaters has been opened up by beavers, the plot is located along a strong flowing seepage rill on the scrubby edge of a red spruce grove, where somewhat open, bog like conditions may have always been maintained by hydrologic conditions and a frost pocket effect. Several state rare, northern species-- bog golden rod (Solidago uliginosa), linear leaved willow herb (Epilobium leptophyllum), narrow leaved burreed (Sparganium angustifolium) and narrow panicled rush (Juncus brevicaudatus)-- are characteristic of the community type.
